Five things on every spec line — here’s what each one does
Outside is the wrapper. Inside, the binder holds the filler together. Length and ring gauge set the size.
The outer leaf. It is the smallest amount of tobacco in the cigar and the single biggest driver of what you taste. It is grown and fermented for looks and flavor, so its color is a real hint at the experience before you ever light it. It adds only a little to strength. That job belongs to the filler.

The mistake almost everyone makes: dark does not mean strong. A maduro wrapper gets its color from longer fermentation, which makes it sweeter, not stronger. Plenty of dark cigars smoke smooth. Judge strength by the tobacco inside, not the color outside.
The tobacco rolled up inside. It is the engine of strength and body, and a big part of the flavor too. Two things set how hard it hits.
Origin. A quick shortcut: Nicaraguan tobacco runs bold and peppery, Dominican runs smooth and mellow. A blend leaning Nicaraguan will hit harder than one leaning Dominican.
Priming. Where the leaf grew on the plant. Leaves from the top get the most sun and the most punch, and are called ligero. The middle and bottom, seco and volado, are milder and are there for flavor and burn. The more ligero in the blend, the stronger the smoke.
The leaf wrapped around the filler to hold the bunch together. It is chosen mostly for a clean, even burn and it adds a little body, but it is the quiet one. On a spec line it matters least to your choice. Think of it as part of the inside, working with the filler, not with the wrapper it sits under.
Cigars are written as length by ring gauge. A 6 x 54 is six inches long and fifty-four sixty-fourths of an inch thick. Neither number tells you how strong a cigar is. A bigger cigar is a longer one, not a stronger one.
Length is roughly your time. A small format runs twenty to thirty minutes, a robusto around forty-five, a toro or bigger an hour and up. Pick the length for the time you actually have. A great cigar you abandon halfway is a wasted cigar.
Ring gauge changes the smoke, not the strength:
A robusto and a churchill from the same line are the same blend. One takes an hour, the other takes two.

Sumatra wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, Nicaraguan and Dominican filler, infused with botanicals and oils.
Sweet and aromatic. Floral, herbal, cedar, coffee. A flavored cigar.
First cigar, or buying for someone else. Macanudo Cafe or Montecristo Classic. Mild, forgiving, hard to get wrong.
You want flavor without weight. Cohiba Red Dot or Arturo Fuente Hemingway. Both Cameroon wrappers, both nutty and sweet, neither will knock you back.
You’ve smoked before and want more. Montecristo White or Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real. Creamy and rich, a real step up without going dark.
You want something strong. Oliva Serie V or AJ Fernandez Enclave Broadleaf. Both full, both 90+ rated, and they taste nothing alike. The Serie V is espresso and leather, the Enclave is dark chocolate and pepper.
You want dark and sweet, not strong. Cohiba Black or Montecristo Platinum. Maduro wrappers, cocoa and coffee, more richness than punch.
You have twenty minutes. Macanudo Inspirado White Ascot or the Montecristo Mini. Tins, small format, done in half an hour.
You want something different. Acid Kuba Kuba. Infused with botanicals and oils, floral and sweet, and unlike anything else on the shelf.

We carry all four Dominican Cohiba lines: Connecticut, Blue, Red Dot and Black, in robusto, corona, toro, gigante and tins. These are the General Cigar Dominican Cohibas, not the Cuban Habanos line, which cannot legally be sold in the United States.
We stock Montecristo Classic, White and Platinum, plus the Classic Mini in a tin of twenty.
All cigars are stored in a commercial humidor at optimal humidity. Dry cigars lose their oils and burn hot, and the humidor prevents this.
Oliva Serie V and AJ Fernandez Enclave Broadleaf, both full-bodied and both rated 90 or higher. They taste nothing alike. The Serie V runs espresso and leather, the Enclave runs dark chocolate and black pepper.
Macanudo Cafe or Montecristo Classic. Both mild, both forgiving, both easy to enjoy without any experience.
Yes, every cigar on this page is sold as a single. Tins are sold as tins.
No. Cuban cigars cannot legally be sold in the United States. Cohiba, Montecristo and Romeo y Julieta all exist as separate non-Cuban brands, and those are the ones we carry.
